Nothing is guaranteed in the NFL––just ask the Seattle Seahawks, whose first game since last year’s Super Bowl ended in defeat at the hands of an unheralded St. Louis Rams team. On any given Sunday, any team can beat any other. Every NFL team goes into every game aware of the risks, but there are times when teams need to be on extra-high alert. The NFL’s upcoming second week is full of dangerous games for the league’s top teams. Here are three teams that should be extra careful this week.
Baltimore Ravens (@ Oakland Raiders, Sunday at 4:05 PM)
Baltimore is a much, much better team than Oakland, and that’s precisely why this game could be dangerous. The Ravens are coming off of a very frustrating loss to Denver. Their week three game is against the divisional rival Cincinnati Bengals. As the sole AFC North team to come out of week one with a win, the Bengals may now be the Ravens’ most important competition for the division (sorry, Pittsburgh, but you’ll have to learn to play defense before you count). There’s going to be a huge temptation to be distracted or to overlook this Raiders team, which is lousy. The Ravens’ experienced coach, John Harbaugh, will have to keep his team focused on the task at hand.
Green Bay Packers (vs. Seattle Seahawks, Sunday at 8:30 PM)
Green Bay is virtually always favored at home, and Seattle’s odds for this game plummeted the moment they lost week one’s game to St. Louis. But Seattle remains a very good team on paper, and now they find themselves in an unlikely must-win situation in the second week of the NFL season. They’re going to do everything that can to come up with a win at Lambeau. The Packers look better than the Seahawks, and they have home field, but Green Bay fans won’t be comfortable until this one is over.
Indianapolis Colts (vs. New York Jets, Monday at 8:30 PM)
The Colts are in a dangerous spot. They still have a great chance to win their division after losing their opening game, but they don’t want to be 0-2 to start the year. They’ll be on the national stage Monday night, and they’ll have to answer a lot of questions about the way that they played in their week one matchup with the Buffalo Bills. These Jets aren’t world-beaters, but they’re a decent squad that beat Cleveland with ease last week. The Colts can’t sleep on them.
