Week 5 Takeaway: Is Alex Smith the Early-Season MVP Favorite?

October 9, 2017 • Ben Heck • AFC, AFC West, Front Page, Kansas City Chiefs

It’s almost hard to believe, but I think Alex Smith may just be the favorite for league MVP at this point in the season.

It’s still super-early, of course.

But you know how us sports writers just love to debate regular season award winners super-early.

Through the first five weeks of the season, Smith has his Kansas City Chiefs as the lone undefeated squad. In those five games, he has completed nearly 80% of his pass attempts and has yet to turn the football over.

It’s honestly pretty incredible what the 33-year old signal caller is doing, and he’s doing it under Andy Reid and with a rookie running back behind him.

Speaking of rookie running back, Kareem Hunt’s 775 all-purpose yards and six total touchdowns has him right at the top of the MVP list as well.

Over the years, Kansas City has been known for its defensive performances. But this year, they’ve been stealing the show offensively.

Alex Smith: 1,391 passing yards (76.6%), 11 TD, 0 INT, 125.8 QB rating.
Kareem Hunt (R): 609 rushing yards, 4 TD on 97 carries (6.3 YPC); 16 catches, 166 yards, 2 TD.
