First, it was the news that 22-year old backup quarterback Johnny Manziel had entered a treatment facility last Wednesday to attend to his personal off-field issues. Then it was yesterday’s news that standout receiver Josh Gordon had officially been suspended for “at least a year” following yet another failed drug test (he tested positive for alcohol this time, which the league can test him for following his DWI arrest last summer).
And now, the bad news out of Cleveland is that General Manager Ray Farmer is being investigated by the league office for alleged text messages regarding play-calls that were exchanged from the press box to the sidelines. Multiple reports, from Yahoo! Sports and reporter Mary Kay Cabot of Northeast Ohio Media Group, have reported that a suspension, heavy fine and loss of draft picks are included in the talks of potential punishment for Farmer.
Mary Kay Cabot also noted in her earlier reports from January that this situation is likely one of the many things that drove offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan out of town. He took a job as the Atlanta Falcons coordinator earlier this off-season, where he’ll serve under ATL’s new head coach Dan Quinn.
As if I wasn’t already feeling sorry for the Cleveland Browns’ fan base. Now they have to put up with all this just three days into the official start of the off-season?
