There is always a player looking to take your position in the NFL, that is just the nature of the beast. The coaching staff is always looking for the next big-time player to come in and be the man, or the team’s future.

This is nothing new, so Eagles quarterback Sam Bradford should’ve embraced the drafting of Carson Wentz. Yes, all athletes have a little bit of an ego, and want to be pampered and babied. That ends after the draft, and some players never experience that treatment.

As an athlete, you have to want to be the best, and be ready to compete for your position at all times. When a player is drafted at your position in an early round, you know it’s time to bring your lunch pail and go to work. Nothing is going to be handed to you, you get lemons and you make lemonade.

Michael Bennett of the Seattle Seahawks had some words for Bradford, and I knew where he was coming from.

“I listened to Sam Bradford again. I just almost threw up. I can’t believe Sam Bradford is complaining about making $40 million in the next two years, and because he actually has to compete for a position. This guy, this guy right here definitely sets a bad tone of what a player should be.”

It’s never easy thinking that you are going to be replaced, or better yet that your team has given up on you. But you can’t dwell on it, coach Doug Pederson said that Bradford is his guy going into this season, but Sam has to know he is a short-term plan. He only signed a two-year extension.

I remember when the Buccaneers drafted Booger McFarland in the first round of the 1999 NFL Draft, and I knew it meant I had to work harder to make the team. I didn’t go into punk-out mode and give up. So Sam Bradford: shut up make your $40 million and move on.
