Jets’ Statement on the Passing of Former DT Dennis Byrd

October 16, 2016 • Ben Heck • AFC East, Front Page, New York Jets

Overnight, former New York Jets’ defensive end/tackle Dennis Byrd passed away at the age of 50 following a deadly car accident, in which his car was struck head-on.

Byrd, who played for the Jets from 1989-1992, is well known for being the guy who was paralyzed during a 1992 game against the Kansas City Chiefs, only to walk again weeks later. Byrd started two full seasons at defensive tackle in New York, which includes a 13.0 sack season in 1990.

Jets’ owner Woody Johnson’s statement:

“We are all devastated by the untimely loss of Dennis Byrd. Soft-spoken and strong-willed, the inspiration he provided to all not only by his play on the field but from the way he overcame life’s obstacles was remarkable by any measure. His impact on the New York Jets and the many lives he touched will never be forgotten.”
