Quarterback Carousel: Niners Acquire Garoppolo, Release Hoyer

Things in the National Football League have been rather interesting over the last 24 hours or so.

With the NFL trade deadline looming (4 p.m. ET), the winless San Francisco 49ers (0-8) decided to shake things up at the quarterback by position by acquiring back-up quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo from the New England Patriots. In exchange, the Patriots received a second-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Subsequently, the Niners released 32-year old veteran quarterback Brian Hoyer. Hoyer started the first six games of the season, completing 58% of his passes for 1,245 yards, 4 TD, 4 INT.

Currently, 24-year old rookie QB C.J. Beathard has been taking snaps under center over the last two games, but with Garoppolo coming in to town it looks like it’s his team now.

In his three years behind legendary Tom Brady in New England, the 25-year old Jimmy G started two games, going 2-0 under center last season. He has appeared in a total of 17 games over those three seasons, completing 67% of his passes (63-of-94) for 690 yards, 5 TD, 0 INT.

It’s a small sample size, of course, but it’ll be interesting to see how much he learned under Brady and Belichick since 2014.
